Glass bottle is one of the most recommended packaging material for liquor or other beverages due to its ability to be recycled making it environmentally friendly as well. Glass bottle is preferred as it protects the flavor of the liquor from the first till the last sip. Glass liquor bottle manufacturing process dates back to 5000 years old tradition while in the modern world it is all automated process. Glass liquor bottle manufacturing is an art of creativity and it is not a simple process as it involves scientific techniques and advance technologies under the supervision of glass liquor bottle manufacturing experts and technicians. It requires years of excellence, continuous improvement and various production techniques to make a high-quality glass bottle. The steps of the glass liquor bottle manufacturing process are briefly described as follows.

Design

The first and foremost step in the glass liquor bottle manufacturing process is the design of the glass bottle depending on the type of liquor/brand. Once the designed drawing is made by glass bottle manufacturing experts, it is make sure that glass bottle is engineered to exact specifications.

Mold Making

Mold making is the most important step in glass bottle manufacturing process as it is responsible for the final shape or design of the glass bottle. Due to its significance, it is done by technical documentation and accurate mold construction drawings. Mold for glass bottle is made from high quality cast iron or bronze alloys. Highly advance machines like “Computer Numerical Control (CNC)” with cutting-edge technologies are used for this step. Special engraving machines with unparalleled expertise are used to make exquisite engravings. Design consultancy and support is mandatory in mould making process. All the quality control measures are assured in this step to produce high quality and maximum lifetime molds.

Matching raw materials

Main raw materials for the manufacturing of glass liquor bottle are

  • Sand (Silica or Quartz powder)

It imparts hardness, brittleness, chemical stability and wear-resistance to the glass bottle. It usually consists of 45% of the batch.

  • Soda ash ( Sodium Carbonate)

It is used as a flux to reduce the melting temperature of silica to make it transform at comparatively lower temperatures. It compromises about 15% of the batch.

  • Limestone ( Calcium carbonate)

It also acts as a fluxing agent in the process and improves durability as well as chemical resistance of glass bottles. It usually consists of 10% of the batch.

  • Cullet

It is recycled and furnace-ready glass and depending upon glass type, it is 5 to 50% of the batch. It is a necessary step as it makes glass bottle manufacturing process environmental friendly.

Among other raw materials are barium sulphate, dolomite, zinc oxide, potassium carbonate, feldspar, boric acid and sodium sulphate, All the raw materials are taken into the exact proportions required to produce the best quality glass bottles.

Raw materials Add to Equipment

All the ingredients are finely powdered and thoroughly mixed into a batch. This is done by advance grinding machines and mixing machine as uniform mixture is very important for the batch. Precise weight and measurement of each batch plays a crucial role in the quality of the final product. Batch is then transfer to large and complex glass furnace at a regulated rate through feed hoppers

Melting

The interior of the furnace used for melting is made up of silica-based refractories that will remove any chance of contamination.  The continuous feed to the furnace is done by the belt conveyer. The furnace operates at a temperature of 2850F (hotter than molten lava) round the clock to melt the mixture in batch producing the viscous mass. To assure fuel efficiency, air and fuel proportion is monitored regularly. The temperature of the furnaces is marinated at peak temperature for consecutive 3-4 hours thus ensuring melting of all the mixture. Air bubbles in this molten liquid are allow passing as they can lead to the defective final product.

Modulation Bottle

This molten glass is then passed through the furnace throat into the refiner at about 2350 ℉. At this step temperature, consistency and time are precisely monitored to make the defect-free final product. The mixture is then fed to the fore hearth where it is cooled about 2200℉ where it gains the consistency of honey. A perfect timely blade shears the glass into precisely weighted gobs of glass which is feed into the forming machine by gravity force. The gob is then transferred into the blank mold for the finishing of neck; thus giving rise to partially formed glass bottle named as “Parison”. Inversion of 180 is done followed by transfer of parison to the blow mold where it is blown to its final shape by reheating. The glass bottles then undergo further annealing process

Produce Bottle

Consistency quality is checked at this stage via visual inspection. These formed bottles are transferred to “Annealing Lehr” where reheating to 1050F is done followed by slow and gradual cooling to 390F. This annealing step i.e. slow and gradual cooling is very important as rapid cooling can cool only the superficial layer of glass leaving the strain in the inner layer thus leading to cracking and shattering of the glass bottle. At the end, by the use of cold end coater an exterior coating is applied to lessen the chances of transit abrasion.

Quality Inspection

Thorough and rigorous quality inspection including bore tests, leak detection, sidewall and base scans, any contamination, sealing surface flatness verification and critical dimensions verifications is done on every bottle to ensure the best quality glass bottles. The bottles are tested and tested again to ensure best quality. Any glass that doesn’t pass this step will be going back as cullet in the raw material for the next batch.

Package

Final packing and palletizing is done for maximum protection during transit by advance automatic packing equipment. For the protection against dust and contamination pallets are then shrink wrapped.  Complete pellets are covered with the cardboard and also receive a specific barcode sticker. Sturdy containers are used for safe transport and shipping of glass bottles.
